Penguin Excursions from Punta Arenas

Season
Mid September through to the end of April

We offer two ways to see penguins from Punta Arenas.
One is to take the rigged-hull zodiac to Isla Magdalena (home to over 150,000 Magellan penguins) and on to Isla Marta (home to sea lions and cormorants).

Experiencechile.org offers THIS excursion – subject to local weather conditions, in which case the excursion below is offered.

The other way is to go to the Seno Otway, en-route to Puerto Natales, but the number of penguins here is much smaller. Seno Otway is accessible by road. Park entrance fee is approx USD15 per person. Experiencechile.org offers THIS excursion only when clients book a private transfer with us to go to Puerto Natales or in the event that the above excursion by sea is cancelled due to bad weather.

Isla Magdalena & Marta
Office to check-in is located at: Jose Nogueira 1255, Punta Arenas

NO SAILINGS ON 25 December and 01 January
AM Check-in at 07:00hrs / Return approx 12:00hrs
PM Check-in at 16:15hrs / Return approx 23:00hrs

In the event of bad weather the excursion to Seno Otway will be offered.

After check-in passengers will be taken on a 25-minute road transfer to the embarkation point (about 25km north of Punta Arenas). The navigation to Isla Magdalena is approx 35 minutes, whereupon passengers disembark onto the island for about one hour to walk around among the penguins. A snack is served before heading off on the boat for another 20 minutes to Isla Marta, where it is NOT possible to disembark, but viewing of wild life is possible from the boat. The return navigation takes approximately 1hr and 15 minutes, plus the road transfer of 25 minutes back to the office. This is currently the best way to get close to the penguins and see other wild life in the area.

Clothes to Take
This excursion involves being in a boat that crosses the sea. You need to have a warm outer coat, warm clothing in general a warm hat, maybe gloves, study outdoor hiking boots, trekking pants (trousers), sun glasses and a camera of course.
